Nightlife takes an insightful look at the devastating war between Israelis and Palestinians continuing in Gaza. It began on October 7th with Hamas's attacks on southern Israel, when around 1,200 people were killed, and 253 others taken hostage. Since then, more than 32,400 people have been killed in Gaza, and the Israeli military continues its offensive aimed at dismantling the governance and military capabilities of Hamas.
There is growing international pressure on Israel to stop the war, but a peaceful resolution seems a very distant hope, especially now a diplomatic rift between the U.S. and Israel has emerged. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu abruptly cancelled a visit by another high-level delegation to the United States when the U.S. abstained from voting on a cease-fire resolution before the U.N (United Nations) Security Council, allowing it to pass.
John Lyons has reported on the Middle East for three decades and profoundly knows the conflict and its causes. The ABC's Global Affairs Editor joined Philip Clark to try to make sense of what is happening and why it is so shocking to the rest of the world.
