HIV conference puts virus back on agenda

Organisers of a conference on HIV medicines underway in Newcastle hope the event will put the virus back on the public agenda.

Dr Michael Boyle organised the Conference for the Australasian Society for HIV Medicine and says there is a danger that the community is becoming comlpacent about the impact of the disease.

Dr Boyle says while much progress has been made in the treatment of HIV, it is still a devastating disease that should be in the forefront of people's minds.

"People feel like the crisis is over and things have been solved, but I think that's being a little bit premature," he said. "The agenda needs to be aware that there is always the risk that if we don't maintain vigilance that the Australian response to HIV which to date has been very good and very effective, will cease to be effective."
