Where to now for birds of the Coorong?
Thursday, 23/07/2009
Now more than ever Australian governments are under pressure to make tough decisions about the future of one of Australia's most famous wetlands - the Coorong region of South Australia.
A three-year study by the CSIRO has found that the Coorong's southern lagoons are now in a state of extreme hyper-salinity - with water up to six times saltier than seawater.
The report also highlights the decline of native seagrass, which in turn is driving away migratory birds.
This has an impact on the global population of these migratory birds, some of which come from as far away as China, Siberia and Alaska.
In this report: Rob Clemens, spokesman for Birds Australia.
