Students in limbo

University Orientation Week has begun in two universities, while most start in three weeks. But many students remain unsure whether they can, or should, begin study this year.

The fate of student financial support is uncertain, because the youth allowance Bill has not yet been passed by Parliament.

These include government scholarships for regional and other students, and the option of earning income in a GAP year to be eligible for an independent allowance.

Glenn Withers from Universities Australia, and Carla Drakeford, the new president of the National Union of Students, outline the issues.
