Walker's loss, wetlands' gain

The Tasmanian Government will expand the conservation area at Ralphs Bay, near Hobart, after the Planning Commission's rejection of a canal estate for the area.
The commission dismissed Walker Corporation's $300 million proposal, saying it was environmentally and socially unsustainable.
David Bartlett says the decision has paved the way for a protected area covering 170 hectares.
"It's a win for the community certainly down here who have been making their voice known," he said.
"It's a win for developers also though because the Government will move to be providing real certainty around this style of development and it's a win of course for cooperative politics."
The Premier has also announced a blanket ban on future canal estates, in response to the commission's report.
