GP's suspension a bid to limit working hours

Posted June 16, 2009 08:23:00

Tasmania's Medical Council says the main reason it suspended a north-east GP was to restrict his working hours.

The council's president, Peter Sexton, says there was no danger in allowing Dr Paul McGinity to return to work, and it was part of the council's plan all along.

Dr Sexton says the complaints against the doctor related to him working too many hours.

He says to fix the problem the council has imposed the condition that Dr McGinity only work 60 hours a week between 8am and 8pm.

"Where we have serious concerns about a particular component of a doctor's medical practice, the only powers we have to control that are to suspend the doctor and then invite the doctor through undertakings to agree to restrictions on his practice," he said.
