Club moves toward racecourse sale

The South Australian Jockey Club (SAJC) has confirmed it is pushing ahead with plans to sell Cheltenham racecourse after the land is rezoned.

The comments come as a feud over the proposed sale continues between federal Labor MP Rod Sawford and the local state Labor MP Jay Weatherill.

Mr Sawford claims Mr Weatherill has not committed to keeping the racetrack open but Mr Weatherill says Labor has always opposed the sale.

SAJC Chief Executive, Steve Ploubidis says the club has no other option but to sell the track.

"So far, no-one's come up with an alternative to assist racing, so until someone does come up with an alternative, the sale of Cheltenham is the only way to go," he said.

"It can be sold as it is but it's worth nothing of course, so rezoning is the next step."
