Two in critical condition, one serious after hit-and-run in Darwin suburb
By Thomas MorganThree people have been seriously injured, two critically, after a hit-and-run near a popular beach reserve in Darwin overnight.
Two men and a woman were taken to the Royal Darwin Hospital.
Police estimate the hit-and-run took place between 1am and 4am Friday on Trower Road in Brinkin, about 13 kilometres north of Darwin.
NT Police Assistant Commissioner Matthew Hollamby said a passing motorist called triple-0 around 3.10am and stayed with the injured pedestrians until an ambulance arrived.
"It's quite apparent that the three people were struck by a motor vehicle, and the major crash investigation unit is comprehensively investigating it as we speak," he said.
Northern Territory police have identified a light-coloured van as a "vehicle of interest" and are calling for more information.
Detective Senior Sergeant Brendan Lindner said they had obtained CCTV of the light-coloured van travelling through the area, but asked anyone with further footage or information to come forward.
"We are seeking CCTV footage from the area between 1am and 4am and appealing for residents with street-facing CCTV in Brinkin, Nakara and Tiwi to contact police to assist the investigation," he said.
Assistant Commissioner Hollamby urged the driver of the car that struck the pedestrians to turn themselves in.
"If you're involved or were the driver of the car that was involved in this tragic incident, we encourage you to come forward and contact the police as soon as possible," he said.
"We will find you, we will identify you".
"There are occasions when people leave the scene of crashes in this particular one, I don't know that reason, but it does it will aggravate the circumstances if you have committed an offence."
Assistant Commissioner Hollamby said the NT had a "disproportionate rate of pedestrian strike crashes" as well as a high number of road deaths.
"Last weekend, there was a single vehicle rollover in Herbert and sadly, the driver of that vehicle passed away in the last day or in within the last day," he said.
It takes the number of lives lost on NT roads this year to 19, compared with four at the same time last year.
