There’ll be orchestras and soloists from many countries as the Sydney Symphony and the Australian Youth Orchestras join such names as the Berlin Philharmonic, the French, Danish and Russian National Orchestras and the Minnesota Orchestra in the music-making at the Royal Albert Hall. Adding to the variety there’ll events with the BBC World Academy led by Ilham Al Madfai, the Penguin Cafe with Kathryn Tickell, a Celebration of Sondheim ... and two Last Nights at the Proms!
There’ll be something to suit all tastes in our season from the 2010 BBC Proms.

A musical feast second to none begins on ABC Classic FM with our season of concerts drawn from the 116th season of BBC Proms. In our most extensive offering yet from this great Festival, the first of over sixty concerts brings with it just one work but one aptly suited to the occasion, Mahler's Symphony No 8 "Symphony of a Thousand". Set in two parts, the extrovert opening section is a setting of 'Veni, Creator Spiritus' while the second part takes a scene from Goethe's 'Faust'. Even though it uses the largest forces Mahler was to call on, it brings with it an almost chamber-music feeling in its intimate spans.

Today's Prom looks to Byron's Manfred for its introduction and culmination. Schumann's overture presents the quintessential Romantic hero but it's played here in the orchestration by Gustav Mahler with Vasily Petrenko directing the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. Byron's Manfred is a man burdened with a guilt born of a past love affair and this sorrow is also at the heart of Tchaikovsky's great Symphony. A work with its thundering and emotion-filled themes, Petrenko feels it could be experienced as a journey of our own soul. Between these two, a late Romantic concerto by Rachmaninov. The Piano Concerto No 2 is a work not often played by our soloist, Simon Trpceski. He chooses not to keep playing the same works time and time again and every performance of the second means something special to him feeling this is where the true responsibility of an artist lies. To Trpceski, the secret in playing this concerto is to go beyond the technical challenges and look to the heart of this magical score.
