A study published in Nature today finds a strong link between higher sea surface temperatures and a major decline in phytoplankton or ocean algae which forms the base of the marine food chain. But a second study concludes that warmer seas can influence marine diversity, which in the long run could rearrange the distribution of sea life on the planet. More

The Catalonian parliament in north east Spain has become the first mainland region in the country to ban bullfighting. From 2012 the controversial spectacle will no longer be staged at the only ring in Barcelona. But many in the country are outraged by a law that they say has less to do with combatting animal cruelty and more to do with Catalonia's fight for independence from Spain.

US researchers say there's evidence to prove that socially isolated people face a health risk equivalent to those who drink or smoke heavily. The findings have been published today in the Public Library of Science Medicine.
